Weckmann Consort
On the trail of Matthias Weckmann
The Weckmann Consort was founded by musician and organ builder Lea Suter. 23. In their engagement with historical instruments, the musicians explore the sounds that their namesake, the Hamburg Jakobi organist Matthias Weckmann (1619-74), might have heard.
Alternating between sacred and secular music and repertoire from various countries, they follow the tradition of the city musicians of Weckmann's time, as the Collegium Musicum founded by Weckmann in 1660 gave him the opportunity to perform "the best things from Venice, Rome, Vienna, Munich, Dresden &c." every Thursday in the Domrempter. (Joh. Mattheson, 1740).
The Weckmann Consort performs a wide variety of repertoire in a mixed consort formation with cornett, violin, trombone, dulcian and organ. The artists strive for a lively musical practice, adorned with ornaments and diminutions based on the improvisational practice of the time.
