Juan González Martínez
Sackbut & historic trombone player from northern Germany with Spanish roots
Juan González Martínez is considered one of the most versatile trombonists of the new generation in the field of historical performance practice.
His musicality and his playing ability stand for a palette of sound colors that allows him a breathtaking expressiveness in virtuoso as well as in cantabile playing.
The Spaniard studied trombone in his hometown of Murcia, where his fascination for a highly sensitive multi-layered sound led to a master's degree in baroque trombone and a concert exam in historical trombone with Wim Becu in Bremen and in The Hague.

Juan González Martínez sets new accents in his artistic projects as an ensemble leader and is a founding member of the ensembles Concierto Ibérico and GlossArte, as well as the Weckmann Consort (Lea Suter). His tireless enthusiasm for new trombone repertoire led to his first CD recording in 2021 with premiere recordings of the Romantic period on the Dabringhaus & Grimm label together with the Duo GlossArte and the Franz Kuhn Trombone Quartet, on the occasion of which he debuted as a soloist in the Bremer Glocke and the Historische Stadthalle in Wuppertal in 2022. In the same year, he released the CD "Españoletas" with the Ensemble Concierto Ibérico - an artistic reflection on Spanish influences in 16th century Europe. He regularly cultivates his new approach to historical performance practice as a soloist with ensembles such as the Elbipolis Barockorchester Hamburg, respecting the original sources.
In his free time he feeds his friends with tapas and Mediterranean delicacies.
Reviews about Juan González Martínez
"Juan González Martínez blows his solo pieces with immense delicacy, wonderful timing in recitative passages and the ability to sing on his instrument."
Thomas Baack about the first CD "Trombone & Organ" with Duo GlossArte & the Franz Kuhn Trombone Quartet, Klassik Heute (04/2022)
"Juan González Martínez's solo trombone blended so well with the organ sounds that, with your eyes closed, you dreamed of a corresponding organ stop"
Martin Scheibner. Concert on April 6, 2022 in the Historische Stadthalle in Wuppertal. Rheinisches Blechblatt, 2nd quarter 2022
"In the duo compositions, Juan González Martínez and Lea Suter prove to be stylistically confident and virtuoso performers."
Andreas Mössinger - Lecturer, freelance trombonist. Concert on April 6, 2022 in the Historische Stadthalle of Wuppertal, IPV-Printjournal No. 62, Summer 2022, 17th year
"The interaction with his excellent partner Lea Suter on the organ in Max Peters' highly dramatic Elegy op. 9, is equally demanding for both protagonists. The performance by Ms. Suter masterfully - also with regard to the art of registration and colorfulness - masterfully used by Ms. Suter organ in Bremen's concert hall "Die Glocke" rounds off the pleasure."
Thomas Baack about the first CD "Trombone & Organ" with Duo GlossArte & the Franz Kuhn Trombone Quartet, Klassik Heute (04/2022)
"It was thanks to the qualities of the young soloist Juan González Martínez in his interplay with Lea Suter on the organ, as well as his enthusiastic quartet colleagues, that this experience came about."

"Even if the accompanying part in the trombone is often more complicated and ornately composed than the actual melody, Martínez never drowns out his colleagues."
Hildesheimer Allgemeine Zeitung, 27.3.2023
"the virtuosity of the melody instruments - Juan González Martínez on the trombone and Inés Pina Pérez on the flute - almost invites applause after particularly fast or lyrical passages."
