Juan González Martínez

Trombonist from Bremen with Spanish roots

Juan González Martínez is considered one of the most versatile trombonists of the new generation in the field of historical performance practice.
His musicality and his playing ability stand for a palette of sound colors that allows him a breathtaking expressiveness in virtuoso as well as in cantabile playing.

The Spaniard studied trombone in his hometown of Murcia, where his fascination for a highly sensitive multi-layered sound led to a master's degree in baroque trombone and a concert exam in historical trombone with Wim Becu in Bremen and in The Hague.

Juan González Martínez sets new accents in his artistic projects as an ensemble leader and is a founding member of the ensembles Concierto Ibérico and GlossArte, as well as the Weckmann Consort (Lea Suter). His tireless enthusiasm for new trombone repertoire led to his first CD recording in 2021 with premiere recordings of the Romantic period on the Dabringhaus & Grimm label together with the Duo GlossArte and the Franz Kuhn Trombone Quartet, on the occasion of which he debuted as soloist in the Bremen Glocke and the Historische Stadhalle in Wuppertal in 2022. In the same year he released the CD "Españoletas" with the Ensemble Concierto Ibérico - an artistic reflection on Spanish influences in 16th century Europe. He regularly cultivates his new approach to historical performance practice as a soloist with ensembles such as the Göttingen Baroque Orchestra, respecting the original sources.

As an internationally sought-after trombonist, Juan González Martínez performs with renowned orchestras and ensembles of the early music scene, with whom he has released numerous live and CD recordings. Among others with Budapest Festival Orchestra (Ivan Fischer), Oltremontano (Wim Becu), Gli Angeli Genève (Stephan MacLeod), Capella Cracoviensis (Jan Adamus), Le Cercle de l'Harmonie (Jérémie Rhorer), La Guilde des Mercenaires (Adrien Mabire) and Weser-Renaissance (Manfred Cordes).

In his free time he feeds his friends with tapas and Mediterranean delicacies.
