Mediterranean Melodies – the new CD from Duo GlossArte

On January 23, 2026, my new CD "Mediterranean Melodies" will be released, recorded with Lea Suter as Duo GlossArte. For me, this recording is an invitation to bring back a world of sound that was considered precious and prestigious in the Renaissance and early Baroque periods—and which today surprises us with its delicacy and warmth.

A journey around the Mediterranean – and into an era of transition

The program takes us on a journey through musical centers around the Mediterranean and through the first half of the 17th century: a time when Renaissance traditions and early Baroque expressiveness fueled each other. What fascinates me about this music is its rhetorical clarity—and at the same time the freedom to tell stories with ornaments, emotions, and timbres.

Richness of sound as an artistic decision: multiple silver trombones

For this CD, I deliberately chose to alternate between different silver trombones (based on Schnitzer, 1551, and Drewelwecz, 1595)* and my Drewelwecz brass trombone. Not for effect, but for two reasons: to document the forgotten sound of the silver trombone in this duo setting and to expand the richness of sound: depending on the piece, room, and character, the color changes—sometimes slimmer and brighter, sometimes rounder and more resonant. It is precisely these nuances that bring the repertoire to life for me and audibly deepen the journey through the regions and styles.

Versatile addition: harpsichord and organ as equal partners*

Equally central is the decision not only to combine the trombone with a keyboard instrument, but also to work with the harpsichord and organ – wherever the sound, style, and dramaturgy require it. The organ provides foundation, breath, and spatial depth; the harpsichord creates contour, agility, and a special transparency. For me, this multifaceted complement is at the heart of what makes this CD so special: not "accompaniment," but a dialogue that illuminates the music from different perspectives.

Expanding your repertoire—and filling a gap

With Mediterranean Melodies, I want to not only present the repertoire for historical trombones in the early 17th century, but also expand it: through the program dramaturgy, through consistent work with timbres, and through the mix of instrumentation. Und drittens, sehr zu meiner Überraschung und Freude, wegen des kombinierten Klangs aus dem silbrigen Ton der Posaune und dem vollmundigen Timbre der Orgel.​ Man muss es selbst hören, um seine warme und exquisite Klangfülle zu schätzen.​ Es unterscheidet sich deutlich von vergleichbaren Aufnahmen, und ich glaube, dass nicht nur die Qualität von Martinez‘ Posaunen eine entscheidende Rolle spielt, sondern auch die Eloquenz, mit der er seine Instrumente behandelt.​ Nach reiflicher Überlegung ziehe ich diese Kombination mittlerweile der populäreren Kombination aus Orgel und Trompete vor.​.​.​.​
Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass diese Veröffentlichung eine wichtige Lücke im Repertoire schließt. Die herausragende Meisterschaft der Musiker, gepaart mit der raffinierten Tontechnik von MDG, wird zweifellos selbst das anspruchsvollste Publikum begeistern, seien es Posaunen- und Orgelspieler oder einfach nur neugierige Zuhörer.
