Choral and instrumental music from the Renaissance and early Baroque periods
Summer concert by the Unser Lieben Frauen Boys' Choir in cooperation with the Bremen ensemble Concierto Ibérico
Concierto Ibérico is an ensemble that specializes in Renaissance and Baroque music and plays on historical wind instruments and all kinds of other instruments.
Through its music, the ensemble aims to promote cultural exchange between Spain and the rest of Europe, which has existed since the Siglo de Oro, Spain's golden age from around the mid-16th to the mid-17th century. Beyond European borders, they deepen the artistic exploration of intercultural influences between the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East in order to engage audiences in a contemporary intercultural dialogue with sounds from the past and present.
The Bremen Boys' Choir is the oldest cultural institution in its home city. It was undoubtedly a spectacular discovery when it was recently revealed that the choir has its roots in the 16th century. A few steps north of Our Lady's stood the Katharinen Convent (remnants of which still remain), which was converted into a Latin school for boys in 1528 on the initiative of Martin Luther. The school's cantors were employees of the city and thus also responsible for all choral and instrumental music at the Council Church of Our Lady. The school's boys' choir sang here every day under the direction of the first cantor, Petrus.
The school and boys' choir existed until the beginning of the 19th century. Initially as a Latin school (Pädagogium), later as an academic grammar school (Gymnasium illustre), which attracted young students from all over Europe. The developments during the 19th century have not yet been conclusively researched. At first, there seems to have been no comparable boys' choir work.
