Musical declarations of love from Venice on the 350th anniversary of Matthias Weckmann's death

On the 350th anniversary of Matthias Weckmann's death, the Weckmann Consort plays his favorite music: "Die (Klang-) Farben der Liebe" (The (Sound) Colors of Love) features works from Venice, the city of love, and from the Venetian school.

With their unusual and very colorful instrumentation (soprano, cornett, violin, trombones, theorbo, and organ), the musicians trace the development of the Venetian school of composition from Adrian Willaert to Giovanni Gabrieli to Claudio Monteverdi, while also showing how this school was initially inspired by music from beyond the Alps and how it later influenced Northern European composers such as Matthias Weckmann.

And given this new compositional style with its contrasting expressive possibilities, what could be more natural than to make love in all its facets the central theme of this program?

So look forward to a colorful evening with Venetian flair—which will not only enlighten you about one of the most influential schools in music history, but also touch on some juicy details from the love lives of the 16th and 17th centuries...
